2024 Charity Turtle Race is here!
2024 Charity Turtle Race is here!
SUNDAY, JULY 21: Join last year’s champion, George, and other NYC pet turtles in an epic race supporting wonderful charities!
Let’s support some great programs and watch some cute turtles do their turtle-y walks!
how to bet on a race!
tl;dr: Tokens are for betting. Tickets are for prizes.
For the 2024 Turtle Race, there are two different kinds of currency. It’s like an arcade (Dave & Buster’s, etc.) or family entertainment center (Chuck E. Cheese, etc.) where you use tokens to play the games and earn tickets to win prizes.
Turtle Tokens allow you to place bets.
Turtle Tickets can be exchanged for prizes at the Prize Table.
In order to place a bet, make your donation at the Token Station and then bring your Turtle Tokens to the Betting Station!
After each race is over, winners must go to the Betting Station to collect their Turtle Tickets. Prizes are first come first serve— good luck!
(For any math/betting nerds who are curious: we are using a modified Parimutuel betting system, in which all bets are pooled together and payouts are calculated by sharing the pool among all winning bets, with payoff odds being proportional to the size of each bet.)
Welcome to the 2024 turtle race!
Our Hell's Kitchen-based urban ecology education program, Earthlings.NYC, is hosting its Second Annual NYC Charity Turtle Race (yes, with actual turtles!) Sunday, July 21.
We have educational and creative opportunities as well as many prizes for participants of all ages who want to wager on a turtle! This event comes from a community collective of friends, family, and neighbors who collaborate on community service / social good initiatives. We’re hosted today at the prime produce Guild for Good, a cooperatively-governed coworking office, special events space, and community center at 424 West 54th Street.
Thank you to all our volunteers, pet turtles and turtle caretakers from all over New York City, and to all our program partners that have made today possible!
And please, if you’re active on Instagram, please please tag us: @earthlings.nyc
Today’s Charity Causes
100% of today’s proceeds will be donated while we also raise awareness for Earthlings.NYC and other NYC-based grassroots ecology initiatives:
New York Turtle & Tortoise Society’s Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation program, run by the inimitable Lorri Cramer. NYTTS which promotes conservation, preservation of habitat, and the promotion of proper husbandry and captive propagation of turtles and tortoises since 1970.
Seeds to Soil which creates citizen science and ecological community projects (such as the TinyPlots initiative and Earthlings.NYC)
Friends and activities
Our community center's own mascot, Hanunah, and locally-owned petstore Petqua's famous sulcata, George, will definitely be participating in the race, as well as rescue turtles currently under the care of our Turtle Team, Weird Al, Thing 1, and Thing 2. None of our native NY turtles are allowed to participate because we don't want to expose them to potential pathogens before we release them back into the wild!
We have 14 turtle participants of various species and sizes from all over NYC, from our biggest 30-60 lb sulcata tortoises to the smallest baby turtles. We will also feature several activities including arts and crafts, a book-based library scavenger hunt, and delicious food and drink options provided by onsite partner, Pop-up 424 (formerly Cafe 424).
Want to earn some extra Turtle Tickets? You can get bonus Turtle Tickets in three ways:
Complete the Cybernetics Library Turtle-themed Book Scavenger Hunt
Complete turtle-themed assignments in a special Turtle Zine created by the highschoolers of Doodle Force Comix!
Purchase refreshments and food from Chef Mom of Pop-Up 424 (while supplies last!)
today’s turtle racers
-
T1: Hanunah
Hanunah the Sulcata (aka African Spurred) Tortoise is a former NYTTS rescue, beloved mascot of the Prime Produce community, and a proud educational partner for Earthlings.NYC and the Turtle Team. His name (Hah-nu-nah) comes from a Seneca/ Iroquois myth about a tortoise who carries the whole world on its back. Carrying the world is hard work, so he’s always on the hunt for his next snack.
-
T2: George
George is the largest sulcata tortoise competing in the Turtle Race, and 2023’s Reigning Champion! Petqua, one of our event sponsors, adopted George 22 years ago when they received a call from an unknown individual looking to donate him. His favorite hobbies are greeting people, eating, and basking for hours. George has a huge appetite and he loves leafy greens, squash, and berries George lives permanently at Petqua and freely roams the downstairs. You can visit George and pick up supplies for your own pet!
-
T3: Tank
Tank is almost 4 years old, making him the smallest and youngest sulcata tortoise competing in the race… but don’t under estimate him! He's very energetic for a tortoise and loves to walk, so he’s allowed to roam around the house and when he's tired he sleeps by the shoes (it's his favorite spot aside from his enclosure). Tank is a pretty fast walker for a tortoise, so let's hope he keeps this energy for the race!
-
T4: Pablo
Pablo is a beloved 4-year old Hermann’s Tortoise who is only about 5 inches long! Although he’s small, Pablo packs a punch with his big personality. A friend of the Turtle Team, Pablo is entering the Turtle Race for the first time this year. He is also celebrating his adoption anniversary this month!
-
T5: Patrick
Meet Patrick, another new entry to this year’s competition. Patrick is a 3-year-old Indian Star Tortoise who loves to snuggle up in his blanket or bask in the sun while showing off his dazzling shell. The star pattern mimics tufts of grass to help them camouflage in the wild.
-
T6: Woodside
Woodside’s momma says she’s part red-eared & part yellow-bellied slider, so she has yellow ears! Woodside lives with her best friend, another turtle named Eddie. This unique beauty is returning to compete in her second Turtle Race!
-
T7: Weird Al
Weird Al is a special red-eared slider who survived over 20 years of neglect before being rescued. His poor living conditions caused his shell to sink in and expose his lil’ turtle butt. Despite everything he’s been through, Al is incredibly friendly (and funny). He is currently under the care of the Turtle Team of Earthlings.NYC, but is searching for his forever home! If you’re ready for a new aquatic bestie, please submit an adoption form!
-
T8: Emerald
This red-eared slider lives the good life with a home full of turtle-y awesome friends. With a face as beautiful as her name, Emerald is entering the Turtle Race for the first time this year and is ready to show you what she’s got!
-
T9: Tina Turtle
Introducing another returning crowd favorite… TINA TURTLE! Tina is a free-range 27-year-old red-eared slider. She is very social and she uses her ramp to come out and walk around the apartment when there are people to meet and climb up to the window to enjoy the view of the garden. Her favorite treat is a piece of clementine.
-
T10: Max Berglund
Max is a 23-year-old free range red-eared slider who enjoys roaming his Manhattan apartment, watching his mom create art, and spends a portion of his exciting life in a tray filled with water and a ramp. That's NYC living, baby! Max takes training very seriously and likes to bulk up on cherries and grapes before the competition.
-
T11: Miss Piggy
Another red-eared slider has entered the races… meet Miss Piggy! This adorable 23-year-old turtle knows how to strike a pose and will be strutting down that race track like it’s the runway!
-
T12: Thing 1
This little cutie and their twin are river cooters who were victims of the illegal pet trade before getting surrendered to the Turtle Team/Earthlings.NYC. The first half of this duo, Thing 1, holds the honor of being a couple millimeters longer and one gram heavier than their sibling. These beautiful babies are up for adoption— submit an adoption application if you’re looking for a longtime pet!
-
T13: Thing 2
The second half of this iconic river cooter duo, Thing 2 is just slightly smaller than their sibling, but is catching up slowly but surely (as turtles do), thanks to his ravenous appetite! This little guy has a lot of energy and is ready to hit the race track! These beautiful babies are up for adoption— submit an adoption application if you’re looking for a longtime pet!
